A Glimpse On The Indonesia Archipelago

Indonesia is known as the largest archipelago country in the world of which land area is only about one fourth of the sea area. This gorgeous country consists of five major islands that is to say Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Papua which used to be called as Irian Jaya. Aside from those big five islands, there are about 17,508 islands spread throughout the nation. The Indonesia archipelago is located between two oceans i.e. the Indian and the Pacific ocean and between two continents i.e. Asia and Australia. This wonderful strategic position of Indonesia archipelago has benefited Indonesia since such location has great influence on its culture, politic, social as well as economic of the particular Indonesia archipelago.

Geographically, Indonesia archipelago is divided into 4 major groups, they are:

  • Greater Sunda group: consists of 4 biggest islands that is to say Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo) and Sulawesi (Celebes).
  • Lesser Sunda group: consist of Bali, Lombok and Nusa Tenggara.
  • Maluku: consist of Maluku (Moluccas) along with all islands located between Sulawesi and Papua.
  • Papua which used to be known as Irian Jaya, the outermost eastern part of the Indonesia archipelago.

The land area of Indonesia archipelago is commonly covered by dense tropical rain forests. It will be easy for us to find countless areas of fertile lands which keep on exist; its fertile is derived from the volcano eruptions for example the fertile lands in Java. Indonesia archipelago is filled with very rich mountains of which 100 ones are still active up till now. We can name several highest mountains in this sophisticated Indonesia archipelago such as mount Rantekombala in Sulawesi, mount Semeru in Jawa, mount Kerinci in Sumatra, mount Rinjani in Lombok, mount Agung and Batur in Bali or mount Tambora in Sumbawa. However, the highest mountain in Indonesia archipelago is the Mandala Top of Jaya Wijaya mountain range in Papua where its top is always covered by snow. There are also countless numbers of big, wide as well as long rivers in this gorgeous country such as Mahakam and Kapuas in Kalimanatan, Musi and Batanghari in Sumatra, Mamberamo and Digul in Papua, Bengawan Solo, Brantas and Citarum in Java. These marvelous rivers commonly function as transportation routes, irrigation as well as source of living. As a matter of fact, several islands in Indonesia archipelago offer numerous gorgeous as well as breath-taking scenic lakes like the Toba, Singkarak as well as Maninjau lakes on Sumatra, the Tempe, Towuti, Poso, Tondano and Limboto lakes on Sulawesi and Sentani lake on Papua. Gorgeous and rare animals and plants also widely spread in the entire country.
