Indonesia is a very large country that consists of thousands of islands with five main landmasses as the largest islands in the country that is to say Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. In regards to its large area which covers about 5,000km or equals to 3,200miles from Sabang in Sumatra Island to Merauke that is located in the island of Papua, Indonesia is divided into 33 provinces to facilitate the government in controlling, maintaining as well as supervising the citizens spread throughout the nation. Indonesia province is the highest level of sub national entity of the local government in Indonesia. Every Indonesia province has its own sovereign local government as well as legislative body. The head of a province is a governor who is elected every five year on the local election along with his legislative body.

Recently, Indonesia province is divided into 33 seven of which are formed in the reformation era that is to say after the year of 2000. There are five provinces which have received special status. They are:

1. Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta (Jakarta Special Capital Region)

2. Daerah Istimewa Aceh (Aceh Special Region)

3.  Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Special Region)

4. Papua

5. West Papua

To facilitate the Indonesia province government in managing its vast area, the Indonesia province is divided into Kabupaten (districts or regencies) lead by a Bupati and Kotamadya (municipalities) lead by Walikota (Mayor). These two regions then divided into smaller regions called Kecamatan (sub-districts) lead by a Camat.
